Deaf Languages

Depending on the stage in life that the individual lost their hearing, and the educational opportunities that were available to them at the time, there can be numerous methods used for communication. Access to a qualified interpreter that is skilled in identifying the different communication styles and possessing the ability to change styles accordingly can mean the difference between effective communications and misrepresentations.

Deaf, Blind, and hard of hearing individuals use a multitude of methods, styles, and languages to communicate. Understanding these differences and being able to communicate effectively with your clients requires the type of in-depth knowledge we provide. Our experienced interpreters offer translation and transliteration services in:
American Sign Language (ASL) is the predominate language used by deaf and hard of hearing individuals throughout the United States. ASL uses the whole body to communicate concepts which are signed in three dimensional space to convey meaning about a large variety of subjects in unlimited contexts. ASL has its own sentence structure, grammar and other linguistic principles which are totally independent of English.
Due to it's lack of formal rules and structure, Pidgin Signed English (PSE) is not considered a "true language". Rather it is viewed by linguistics experts as a way to bridge the gap between native ASL signers and English speakers. With its mix of ASL rules and English grammar PSE can be used differently by each individual depending on their knowledge of English and of American Sign Language.
Signed Exact English (SEE) is a form of communication where signs are used in exact English word order. It is typically used to teach English to deaf individuals. Often deaf children use this form of communication with hearing parents who are not fluent in sign language.
